It is quite widely known that engineers are very busy individuals because they manage several projects. Here are some ways as a fellow engineer can help! 1) Conduct maintenance on site client’s premise when your colleague is unable to handle single-handedly. To help, you will have to understand the situation ensuring there is no miscommunication of expectations and executions. 2) Conduct equipment testing on operations that you are familiar with when you colleague needed help 3) Conduct pre-sales together with sales team when the project is huge and your expertise is required 4) Introduce suppliers and vendors who can be useful to your colleague. This is usually done by introducing them face to face and explain project requirement before they take over 5) If you are going to purchase spare parts such as screws, bolts, cables, and more, it is good to ask if fellow colleagues would like to buy anything from the location you are visiting. This saves them time and effort. Always be clear of the differences between help and responsibility. Helping is using your own resources to help with little to no influence when it comes to performance evaluation. Responsiblity is very related to performance evaluation. Hence, it is important you know when to say no if necessary. Fault call is activated when Command Centre did not receive arming signal even though the premise is supposedly armed at that particular timing. This is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from security response where alarm will be sounded off. This is when we will call the customer and assure arming has already been made. If not, we will visit the premise. Our Job Process includes; 1) Drive company car to visit the premise to check on both alarm and entry access system for any system abnormalities. Typical tools used are Allen key, Screwdriver set, wire crimper, multimeter, laptop, and electrical diagrams. - Typical issues that we can resolve are; simple reconnection of cables and wires by crimping , replacement of sensors, ballast, fuse, and reprogramming of the software. - If technical fault issues are unable to be resolved within our capabilities, we will transfer to the technical department where they have contractors with manpower to handle. 3) We aim to finish troubleshooting within the day to minimize the usage of manpower since another person from the next shift must take over. I tried so much, but I just can't do well in JC! We have solutions for you! Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: Christy Lee Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:58:01 am Say Hello Article Solution Say Hello Share with someone you care ! It is often easier said than done. Most students face similar problems with doing well despite putting in an immense amount of effort. It is important not only to work hard but also to work smart. Here are four common problems faced and how to resolve them! 1) Listened without understanding 2) Expectations (Planned) VS Reality (Executed) 3) Practice did not make improvement 4) Ineffective consultations 1) Listened without understanding "I have been listening attentively to lectures, but I still cannot understand the lecture's explanation and the concepts in general." ----- What can I do? ----- - Paying attention during lectures is important. However, most students often neglect the importance of pre-lecture preparation . - Are you reading your lecture materials beforehand? It allows you to understand the flow of the lecture. This way, you can follow the lesson better. - Identify the part of the notes that you are unclear of. Listen to that portion more closely during the lecture. If the environment setting disallows you from raising personal doubts, have your queries answered after the lecture or during consultations. 2) Expectations (Planned) VS Reality (Executed) "I do plan my study schedule, but I tend not to achieve what I set out to do at the start. The plan is just not feasible." ----- What can I do? ----- - What time intervals are you using to plan your studying schedule? A monthly one might be too long-term to be feasible. Avoid such long-term planning as it will be difficult to account for impromptu situations like a sudden Co-curricular Activity (CCA) meeting after school. - Plan realistically, not ideally. - Daily planning allows one to consider different factors (like upcoming tests and time left in a day) to plan feasibly. Weekly planning allows one to see the week's objective at a glance and push one to work harder each day to complete the week's goal. 3) Practice did not make improvement "I did a lot of practice papers and questions; no visible result is seen." ----- What can I do? ----- - Do you attempt to identify patterns in the numerous questions you do? Identifying these patterns allows you to apply the same concept to seemingly different questions. - Note down questions you find tough to solve so that you can revisit them before your examinations to keep the solving concept fresh in your mind. 4) Ineffective consultations "I actively scheduled consultations with my teachers, but I do not find them helping with my understanding." ----- What can I do? ----- - Have you beforehand conveyed to your teachers what you wish the session's main focus to be? This allows your teachers to plan the consultation in a way that caters to your needs. - Is it a conceptual problem or a context-specific question? Pre-consultation preparation by you is definitely required. Ensure that you have identified the questions you have doubts about. - Never go to a consultation empty-handed. My partner doesn't feel loved. What should I do? Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: Shinee Lim Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:59:28 am Say Hello Article Tips Say Hello Share with someone you care ! Everyone expresses love differently. By identifying your partner's love language, you can make them feel desired. Furthermore, you will understand more about yourself, which benefits your relationship . Here are some tips for each love languages; 1) Words of Affirmation 2) Gifts Giving 3) Acts of Service 4) Quality Time 5) Physical Affection 1) Words of Affirmation Have you chanced upon times when simple praises and words of affirmation such as "I love you" and "Thank you" make your partner's day? If yes, this may be their love language. By knowing this, you should; - Speak or craft texts to show how much they mean to you on a regular basis. Always motivate them with phrases they like to hear and assure them when things are uncertain. - Be mindful of your language during an argument as they are very sensitive to harsh words. Since its one of their love language, the lack of affirmation or accidental wrong choices of words (e.g. insults) may hurt your partner If this is the correct love language, you should see your relationship improving. 2) Gifts Giving Your partner likes receiving gifts as much as giving them and is seen from their reactions. When your partner receives your gift, they feel noticed. If your gift was something well-thought-out, it makes them feel understood. If this seems familiar, this may be their love language, and you may; - Be more proactive in getting gifts for your loved one in the form of small surprises. Gift things that you know your partner will like, and it could be as simple as buying a tub of ice cream to show you care. If you have the time, you can even handmade your gifts (e.g. cards). - Never forget to gift on special occasions as your partner may put a lot of emphasis on these dates. Instead, set a reminder so that you can prepare in advance and surprise your loved one on that day. If this is the correct love language, you should see your relationship improving. 3) Acts of Service Your partner feels loved most when you help them with their day to day tasks . The action of you tolerating the "extra work" and compromising makes them feel important. Reactions that shows appreciation reflects they felt loved. If this is one of their love languages, you should; - Take the initiative to carry out tasks to make your partner feel they are taken care of. You may do things that you know they need help in; such as cooking meals, collecting parcels, and/or packing bags to ease the burden off their chest. - Never do it out of obligation and miss out on tasks you promised you would do. This will disappoint your partner. - Avoid becoming their "servant" since your partner may unknowingly treat your service as mandatory. This means, instead of feeling appreciated, they felt necessary. If this is the correct love language, you should see your relationship improving. 4) Quality Time Your partner strongly values meaningful interactions . They feel most important when you are paying your fullest attention and listening when they speak. One-on-one time is very special to them. If you observe your partner enjoys this interaction, this may be one of their love languages, and you should; - Plan more memorable dates ; it could be as simple as preparing a meal together. Give your partner your undivided attention by putting away distractions and being fully present and engaged. - Try not to cancel dates frequently if possible, as it may make your partner feel unwanted. Spend your free time with your partner whenever you can. If this is the correct love language, you should see your relationship improving. 5) Physical Affection Your partner feels a sense of connection whenever you show physical affection, such as kisses, hugs, and intimacies. They feel desired, warmth and also safe in this physical relationship. If this is one of their love languages, you should; - Initiate physical affection more often to let your partner feel loved (e.g. hand-holding, hugging, kissing). When your partner exhibits these affections, reciprocate whenever you are comfortable in an atmosphere where it is not oppressive. - Keep in mind what kind of physical affection your partner likes instead of what you like - Never neglect your partner physically. Your partner needs to feel treasured for the bond between both of you. When you do not initiate nor reciprocate physical affection, this may leave your partner feeling unwanted and rejected. This can even take a toll on their self-esteem. If this is the correct love language, you should see your relationship improving. Additional Tips - You and your partner may speak different love languages . Hence, you should express love in the way they wish to receive it, not how you wish to receive it. - Even if you speak the same love languages , it is still important to communicate and observe what your partner like and dislike as you two may feel things differently (E.g. Under the love language of "Words of Affirmation": one prefers shorts praises, the other only starts feeling satisfied after a long compliment). - Your partner may have more than one love language , and this may apply to you too. Be open and communicate actively as your partner deserves to know. You cannot expect them to understand you without proper communication. - Your partner's love language may even change over time. Notice how your partner is expressing their love language towards you. Appreciate their actions and meaning. Gradually, you will be able to accept and give back that type of love. - Love is a commitment from both ends ; time and effort are required to understand and consistently maintain a good relationship with your partner. - Read basic mechanical drawings
Read basic mechanical drawings Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: WE Development Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:51:19 am Say Hello Article Job Process Say Hello Share with someone you care ! Whenever you need to mount or assemble something, you need to rely on mechanical drawings! Because we are dealing with basics, here are 5 tips to take note when interpreting a mechanical drawing! 1) Part Number 2) Metrics 3) Mounting Points 4) Views 5) Tolerances 1) Part Number Part number gives us the certainty that we are working on the correct part . This is also the key information used to search online for part drawings if you are purchasing or working with components from a supplier. 2) SI Units If you are working with US products, the parts will most likely be in Inches. Otherwise, milimeters is quite common. Knowing 25.4mm is equivalent to 1'' (1 inch) is the minimum basics you need to have . You also need to be mindful that for holes, the type of threading and depths follows the SI units as well, unless specified seperately. For example, you need to understand what is 5/16 hole. In this case, is a 7.9mm diameter hole acquired by having 5/16 multiplied by 25.4 (conversion from inch to mm). 3) Mounting Points At the basic level, we are often concern about how we can mount a component to another. Hence, you need to focus areas in the drawing that have the information on mounting points. It will be good you can refer to pictures or the actual component to verify that the holes are indeed mounting points you could use. To help you identify if the hole is a mounting point, you can look for holes with labels start with "M" which stands for Metrics (mm) holes. For example, M8 means the hole is designed for 8mm diameter bolt. M6 means the hole is designed for 6mm diameter bolt. Also, if you working with inches, for example, 3/8-24 means it is a 3/8'' diameter with 24 threads per inch. Do note that 24 means fine thread while 18 means coarse thread . An example is 5/16-18 means this is a 5/16 diameter bolt with 18 threads per inch which is a coarse thread. If you like to know more, you may click here to read further! 4) Views When finding for dimensions that you need, you must know how to identify views. This includes auxilliary views, detailed views, section views and more which are often labeled in the drawing . Keep a look out for those and identify them effectively. Also, knowing what is top view, front view, etc. are the ground fundamentals an engineering should know and shall not be elaborated here. 5) Tolerances Occasionally, you may have to design a simple shaft and that you will be struggling a while due to uncertainty of tolerances. It is important you identify your shaft's application and fitting to decide on the way to go. "How do I know if I need to be worried about the tolerances?" Many new engineers will ask. The answer is, if the dimension from the part is 2 decimal places and more (for example 2.565mm, you will have to consider more carefully since this require precise machines such as CNC to cut . This means higher cost. You can do your homework here by reading this article and seek clarification from your supplier. A further upgrade to your understanding is to learn GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) which deals with more precise works that are 2 decimal points and more. Do take note that GD&T applications on your drawings that are 1 decimal place or less may not be advisable as this can drive manufacturing cost up due to additional processes. Juggling when to place such tolerance is important to balance between quality and cost. You may further read this article to learn more. - Is everything either black or white?
Is everything either black or white? Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: JP Tan Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:57:26 am Say Hello Article Insights Say Hello Share with someone you care ! Is black considered black if its environment is black? Or is white considered white if its environment is white? If there is a white spot in a black paper , is this a defect? If there is good in an environment of evil, is this also a defect? Often, we are struggling to do good in an environment that forces us not to because we will be looked upon as a defect. Like a person who goes against the norm and affects the balance of operations to do good. Instead of being the white, you are considered as the defect of black. You tried not to be the defect of black; however, your heart tells otherwise. Your decisions are often in a dilemma. Your actions result in a spectrum of Grey, stuck between black and white. This constant struggle within the spectrum of Grey causes uncertainty and fear to arise. Your actions slowly turned into black due to rejections and self-protection. Soon, you realised, you are a black spot in a white paper . You became a defect of white. Often times, we thought what is good for our environment might not be really what they want. Just like being a white spot in a black paper. You tried to blend in, but you felt something could be done better. You start doing things differently, and resistance arises. Just like your actions results in a spectrum of Grey. Stuck between black and white. Instead of holding on to good intentions, you ended up in conflicts with the environment. Instead of doing good, you are now seen as otherwise. You became the black spot in a white paper. Many of us might have gone through this stage, and everyone has their reasons to do good . The next time you see someone being seen as the defect of white, look deeper. They might be the defect of black who just wanted to stay in their principle of white. Communicating with Headquarter (Field Engineer) Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: WE Development Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:44:07 am Say Hello Article Job Process Say Hello Share with someone you care ! When product issues are beyond our capabilities to resolve, we will seek help from the Headquarters. Because the headquarters (HQ) of reputable brands usually are located in Europe, the US, and China, Singapore becomes an attractive regional hub as for technical and sales activities. Mainly because of our bilingual capabilities and stable operations. To seek advice, we usually email HQ first . Unless urgent or necessary, we will arrange a voice or video call. Time zone is a crucial factor here. 1) The reasons for seeking their advice are; i) The headquarter oversees the manufacturing of products and systems. Thus, they should be aware of the problems during manufacturing and software configurations. ii) There may be a lack of steps taken during a manufacturing or configuration process, which may cause anomalies. iii) It may be a setting issue when HQ forgot to configure it back to its original state after testing is done iv) It may be a compatibility issue if newer versions of their products cannot communicate well with older systems. v) The new product was launched too quickly and was not fully tested in actual scenarios. Hence, the error occurs, and a new form of solution has to be devised. 2) To ensure proper communication; i) In our email, we ensure that the issues are stated and elaborated clearly by - Stating how the problem was surfaced - Details of the problem - Attempted troubleshooting carried out - Stating relevant observations ii) Enquiries will usually take up to 3 days , depending on the complexity of the issue iii) Sometimes, a system patch could solve the problem iv) If necessary, certain components and parts that HQ couldn't solve are replaced with versions they are more confident with You may also like Managing expectations of customer as an Engineer Assisting sales team (Field Engineer) Paperwork (Engineer) Disclaimer We did our best to provide you with thought-through content. This can be done by stating the before and after of the child's progressive improvement . iii) Next, I will define the areas where the student can further improve by stating what they are weak at and propose viable solutions to overcome. This allow parent to understand their child's weakness and if possible, assist them in their learning. iv) Occasionally, I will also feedback on student's homework and inform them of their deadline for submission For students who are performing well I will do the following; i) I will start by letting the parent understand the lesson curriculum ii) I will then state how the student has improved and attain good results to this point. iii) Next, I will identify areas this student can further improve and how to gain more exposure. iv) I will then explain our plans to continue helping their child do well v) Depending on the tuition centre, we will inform the parent about our referral reward which they can enjoy tuition fees discount. Maintenance and Repair Machineries Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: WE Development Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:50:55 am Say Hello Article Job Process Say Hello Share with someone you care ! Downtime is not acceptable, especially in times of urgent situations. Our responsibility is to ensure all types of machinery are well maintained to prolong their life, and ensure there is a contingency plan when they are down. Here are a few tips you should consider; 1) Follow the maintenance routine recommended by the machine manufacturer . However, due to variation of usage, operator, and cost, maintenance routine can be affected. For example, using a cheaper oil cuts cost but may affect the machine's performance if the maintenance routine is not adjusted accordingly. 2) Provide proper training for machine usage and ensure the machine users carry out good cleaning and maintenance routine. 3) Keep in mind the duration of the repair in the event when it is required. Take note of the longest repair time when you are speaking to the manufacturer and ensure work curriculums will not be affected during the downtime. 4) Have in mind to train someone in the organization to repair minor problems on the machine . This reduces incurred cost when activating personnel from the manufacturer. Always keep a few contacts if you need to outsource such repair work. This ensures you have alternatives when other contractors are unable to meet your schedule. There may be times when the repair personnel is not experienced enough and changed items that are working fine. On top of that, they charge you manhour and component price, which you should not be paying. Hence, it is important you allow the repairman to check, diagnose, and brief you on the problem before letting them start on the work. - The 6Ps of Holistic and Effective Business Growth
The 6Ps of Holistic and Effective Business Growth Brought to you by: Nebulex Content written by: Bo Wen Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:52:26 am Say Hello Article Definition Say Hello Share with someone you care ! Intro: Running a business is not the same as growing a business. Growing a business requires a more robust strategic approach. This 6P model provides a holistic basis to design a business growth strategy. P1: Product Without a product, there is nothing to sell. Here we regard “product” as the totality of the business’s offerings, including physical products (e.g. toothpaste), intangible products (e.g. insurance policy), personal services (e.g. hairdressing) and automated services (e.g. online map). Some key questions to help you understand how your product can contribute to your growth strategy are: 1. What market needs are there which no product has yet solved satisfactorily? a. Example: Difficulty in finding cabs was solved by ride-hailing mobile applications. 2. What is missing in your product range that could create new opportunities for your business? a. Example: Retail fashion brands strong in the adult market could spin off a child brand targeting children of their adult customers. P2: Process The mechanism to supply, sell and deliver your products to your customers is known as the process. Whether you manufacture, assemble, trade, distribute, resell, bundle, configure, serve, solve, exchange, advise or entertain, these are all parts of your process. Some key questions to help you understand how your process can contribute to your growth strategy are: 1. How can wastage, defects, mistakes and omissions be mitigated? a. Example: Kaizen and lean six sigma help to improve manufacturing processes. 2. Can we do things differently to provide better value? a. Example: Built-to-order computers allowed tech-savvy people to customize their personal computers. P3: People People are the main driving force making things happen for businesses, even if a large part of their process is outsourced, automated or discontinued. The acquisition, management, training, motivation and retention of talented people make a huge difference to the business’s capabilities. Some key questions to help you understand how your people can contribute to your growth strategy are: 1. What kind of people will fit best into our company culture? a. Example: Pet shops emphasize that applicants to their companies should love animals. 2. What kind of culture will attract the people who best fit the company’s needs? a. Example: A culture that celebrates innovation will attract creative minds to boost the solutions development capabilities of technology companies. P4: Promotion Businesses won’t fly if nobody knows about them. But communicating with the market is an art in itself, and choosing the right tone telling the right stories to the right audience on the right channels is instrumental. Some key questions to help you understand how you can better communicate with your market are: 1. Where do our target customers hang out most? a. Example: Mortgage brokers and conveyancing lawyers tap on partnerships with property agencies to reach their customers. 2. How can we tune our communication to the traits of our customers? a. Example: Retail brands often invoke the dreams and fears of customers to make a stronger impression. P5: Plant The plant refers to the setup that makes running of the business possible, whether it is a shop, office, factory, warehouse, eatery, institution, academy, webshop, arcade, theatre, arena, trailer, park, pool, farm or wherever else. Planning for the environment of the business could have positive effects on productivity, efficiency, morale and effectiveness. Some key questions to help you understand how you can improve your business environment are: 1. How does our plant tie in with our processes? a. Example: Hospitals are set up with the A&E department nearest the ambulance dropoff to ensure emergency cases get medical attention fastest. 2. How does our plant affect our people? a. Example: Creative businesses often have cool and funky office interior space planning to provoke imagination and invoke inspiration. P6: Performance Performance is about everything else that affects the business performance apart from the 5 major aspects already mentioned, including risk management, compliance, finance management, brand, corporate structure, administration, innovation and others. Some key questions to help you understand how you can boost your business performance are: 1. What remains a weak link in our business that doesn’t fall under any of the earlier 5 aspects? a. Example: Companies with long credit terms tend to face cashflow challenges and may incur significant interest expenses to ensure liquidity. 2. What can we do to overcome these weaknesses? a. Example: Re-evaluating and repositioning the business away from price competition will help improve the business’ negotiation power on credit terms. Relooking strategically at the 6Ps of your business will you reimagine your business and redefine growth. Testimonials “Bowen's passion is irrefutable and boundless. Basic counselling to students Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: WE Development Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:50:44 am Say Hello Article Job Process Say Hello Share with someone you care ! Students in the classroom may not always be of the same background, such as; financial situation, learning ability, and social behaviour. Even though we are not counsellor, our responsibility is to ensure students are learning in an environment they are comfortable with. Here are few ways you can consider if you are faced with a similar situation. 1) During class interactions, I will always interact with students to see if they require any help. I will show interest in their work and provide ways to improve. 2) I will first establish myself as approachable so anyone who has an issue can look for me. As long as you have the heart for your students, they can feel it 3) Being approachable, students will enquire about matters like their projects how to cope with studies questions about their future how to use equipment and tools in the lab 4) When they approach me, I will ask questions to gather information about their issue , so I can plan how to help them. Active listening is important here. Most importantly, I need to let them know I am not a professional counsellor but can help provide solutions or direction for them. 5) If the situation is not within my capability, I will seek a professional counsellor/mentor to assist this student. Definitely, after convincing and having the permission from the student. 6) I will also identify weaker students or those who always sits alone. Then, speak to them and see if they need help. I will also take this chance to encourage them to study and work as a group to improve their results. This is more important for tertiary students as most works are project-based, and tutorial questions are hard to solve alone. 7) Some issues that occur to students might be; Working part-time to pay for school fees causing them to not do well in school Relationship issue with partner, friend or family Not doing well in school but have tried their best 8) For occasion when I approach student to speak to them is when; They often sleep through the class without learning Absent from class Often not being punctual Out of norm behaviors such as being hot-tempered and demanding with classmates It is important to understand concerns the students may face and encourage interaction amongst them through group-based discussions. This enables active thinking, communicating, and voicing any concerns that help them clarify any doubts. For weaker students, I will help them to identify their learning styles , and work based on their needs. For example, for a visual learner, he/she may understand better when presented with pictures, diagrams or mindmaps.
