Starting JC? Here's 5 tips to ace it! Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: Christy Lee Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:58:12 am Say Hello Article Tips Say Hello Share with someone you care ! While two years seem short, there is so much that a junior college student can achieve. It is crucial for one not merely to be fixated on the 'A' Level examinations but to strike a balance between academic excellence and holistic development . In the long term, this can help one's pursuits beyond junior college. Hence, here are five tips to help you! 1) Initiation 2) Exploration 3) Self-identity 4) Priorities 5) Collaboration 1) Initiation - Have a motivated mindset to be proactive in learning new things and to take the initiative to make your JC journey useful for your future! - Step out of your comfort zone by experimenting with new things and making mistakes. By learning through failing, we grow, mature, and become better! - Getting used to taking initiatives in junior college is an excellent habit to cultivate self-directed learning, which will eventually be the main learning mode in your future tertiary education and beyond. A message of encouragement Don't be afraid to step into the unknown. The decision is yours to make. "A spark is a little thing, yet it may kindle the world. ” Martin Farquhar Tupper However, do practice safety and avoid unhealthy influences! 2) Exploration - Avoid spending the entire two years only studying. While 'A' Level examination is the final destination at the end of JC, this is also now a suitable time for you to experiment with different activities. - These activities can include event-planning on a Co-curricular Activity (CCA), school or even community level, volunteering, networking sessions, job attachments, and competitions. - All these accumulated experiences can enrich your portfolio, which will be used during post- 'A' level tertiary educational institution or internship applications. - Beyond simply exploring, take time to engage in post-activity reflections, and crystallise what you have learned from these experiences. This can show the future interviewers that your participation was meaningful and not superficial. A message of encouragement Accumulate life lessons from exploring the unfamiliar. You can start by gaining exposure through meeting new people, joining new activities, and trying out new things! 3) Self-identity - It is crucial to find and develop your self-identity; What defines you as a person? What are your values and principles? - This can help you to eventually craft your Unique Selling Point (USP) so that you will be able to distinguish yourself from people and being successfully chosen or accepted. - A commonly asked question would be, "Why should we choose you and not others?" Start by asking yourself this; "Why me?" . A message of encouragement "Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation." Oscar Wilde, De Profundis Take time to know yourself , your values, your beliefs. Never let the external noise influence your internal self! 4) Priorities - While gaining exposure is important, you still have to be clear about your role as a student and fulfil that role ultimately. The goal is still to do well for the 'A' Level so that you can be brought to your dream job or institution. - Therefore, be mindful of not taking up too many commitments to prevent yourself from being overwhelmed and compromise your quality of work or ability to be responsible as a result. - It is impossible for you to complete everything at once. Rank the commitments you have chosen to take up in terms of factors like urgency or impact. Sometimes, it is inevitable that we have to give up on some to achieve the greater good. A message of encouragement It will be good if you can take time to reflect and plan your priorities to be effective! Do the right things at the right time. 5) Collaboration - While there are fewer subjects to study in junior college than secondary school, the content tested is much heavier. Moreover, you are expected to manage all the different subjects concurrently. - You can make the studying process less tedious by tapping on the resources available around you . For instance, make study notes together with your like-minded friends. Such collaboration relieves workload, introduces more ideas, and diversifies perspectives. - For people who are afraid to clarify their doubts with their teachers alone, organise a group consultation session instead. This again facilitates the exchange of ideas, making learning more enjoyable and less lonely. - Collaboration is a crucial skill that is applicable when one enters the workforce as well. Junior college provides a constant avenue for you to learn how to collaborate and reap its benefits. A message of encouragement If you have not learned how to communicate and collaborate with people, now is the time! Two or more heads are better than one. Paperwork (Engineer) Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: WE Development Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:44:03 am Say Hello Article Job Process Say Hello Share with someone you care ! Proper documentations promote accountability and traceability, especially in times of uncertainties and conflicts. As an engineer, it is a good practice we document the work we have done on-designing, on-testing, on-site, and on-commissioning. Besides, we have other paperwork to do, such as claims, handover, user manuals, and more. Here, we explain the three main categories you may face; 1) Report The different types of report are; i) Test report - report on observation before and after the test, conditions used during the test, results of the test, and recommendations are usually present in this ii) Service report - report on what has been done in a task given. This includes; - stating the specifications before and after the service - what has been improved and qualified after the service - and recommendation to take iii) Commissioning report - report on the processes taken and the quality of test results in compliance to recommended standards agreed with customers. iv) Design-change report - when a design was changed on existing products, a report may have to be written to state - the reason behind the change - what actions are taken to validate the changes are safe - and who are the involved personnel - what is the revision number for this version of change v) Task report - This explains what actions are carried out during a specific task. This often illustrates - why the task was required - how the task was done - what resources are used - who is involved - when did you carry out the task vi) handover report - This explains the list of items to be handed over from one entity to another with proper agreement and signature in place 2) Claims i) Purchase and transport claim - when you pay first on behalf of the company to get things done faster or out of convenience, you will need to take time to make claims. These claims usually have to be done within a timeframe of at least two weeks to three months and are generally small transactions. ii) Travel and lodging claim - when you travel, the company will provide an allowance for daily activities and lodging. You may either make an advance claim first, otherwise a claim after the trip. 3) Manuals Manuals are written to state the instructions for operations and safety precautions related to it. This is written to provide clarity to assist in works like training, operating, and assembling. 4) Request i) request for quotation (RFQ) - when you need to purchase expensive items, you will need to RFQ. This process may come with technical drawings, diagrams, and specifications to allow the vendor to understand your needs and provide a quote best suited to your needs; collecting three quotes is a standard practice. ii) request to purchase - after you agree with the RFQ price, you will need to seek finance approval on the purchase, and a request form is required . This request form should specify; - the purpose of this purchase - what is to be purchased - who authorised this purchase - when do you need the items in by - how do you wish to pay the vendor Because our workload may be overwhelming , it is important you set aside time for these tasks during planning so you can better manage You may also like Design Concept Realisation (Engineer) Communicating with Headquarter (Field Engineer) Assisting sales team (Field Engineer) Disclaimer We did our best to provide you with thought-through content. RISE to your highest heights! Here's 4 steps to start! Brought to you by: Natural Genius Academy Content written by: Anji Hallewell Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:57:13 am Say Hello Article How-To Guide Say Hello Share with someone you care ! Have you been so confident at one moment on “I can do something!” and after that, you backtracked? Uncertainties arise when we rationalize and navigate ourselves too much in our mind so often that we forget what is from our hearts; the one that motivates us to achieve the things we seek. In this article, we share how these four simple steps could help you! 1) R emember 2) I ntention 3) S tabilise 4) E ngage 1) Remember Have you done anything positive that makes people feel happy or proud of? Or have you made any achievement, even if it’s a tiny one, that you can pat yourself on your shoulder? Now, in your mind, are flashbacks of positive scenes coming in? Do you now feel a positive energy as well? This simple method helps you to bring yourself back into a state of positivity and give you the energy of confidence once again. 2) Intention With this energy up high, ask yourself, what aspirations do I want to achieve? What do I envision? How strong is my intention? A strong purpose that drives the intention will give you energy along the way because you believe! There’s a famous saying, Where there is a will, there is a way! How strong is your will? How much stakes are you willing to put into achieving this goal? 3) Stabilise When you finally decided that “I can do it” and then, you felt fearful of the uncertain; this is the time to tell yourself to Stabilise! What makes you feel uncertain must always have a solution that counterbalances it; such as from; - the people you know who can provide you with fresh bits of advice and feedbacks - when you reflect to see you might have missed out on something important - self-belief to tell yourself that worries are simply because you have not understood the situation enough - taking things one step at a time as you solve multiple small issues strategically - Know that out of adversity comes great opportunity! 4) Engage The more you fear, the more you resist change. We encouraged you to start and engage immediately with that intention of yours and achieve the very thing you want in life! Remember, it is important to stabilise your thoughts along the way and tell yourself that solutions are always out there. Courage outweighs fear! When you follow and repeat these four simple steps, you will grow, and you will achieve greater heights! Testimonials I found out that my life has been very messy, which affected my productivity. Anji's programme gave a deeper look into myself which has really benefited me. The thing I took away was how practical the exercises were. I could practice at work or at home. I just needed 2 or 3 mins of time to get myself back to the center. So, far it's worked out very well for me, as I am an overthinker and it really disrupts my work Brian, School Manager I found myself very caught up in to-do lists, negative thoughts and harsh judgements on myself. I was easily overwhelmed and missing out on fun experiences. I'd used a few apps in the past but I didn't really know how to take it into the real world. After, I found myself more in touch with what was going on. I was able to identify how I was feeling in situations and able to accept or change them. I felt calmer and I had the ability to cope with unpleasant situations, as well as, being mindful and present for all the fun things too. Sally, Advertising Executive I took the programme because i wanted to better understand what to do when i felt anxious. after the programme, I feel like I can better regulate my thoughts and emotions which has helped me not just at work but in my personal life. Project Management as an Engineer Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: WE Development Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:53:33 am Say Hello Article Job Process Say Hello Share with someone you care ! There are 3 important considerations when managing an engineering project. They are; 1) Managing People 2) Managing Time 3) Managing Finance Manage People - Matching the skills of individuals to the right task - Motivating the team to ensure they are motivated and to maintain quality delivery of results - Keeping the team well aware of latest updates from customer to prevent “last minute” rush for work - Provide clear instructions and executions to prevent misunderstanding to different stakeholders - Manage expectations of customers by not overselling the project and timeline, regular discussion with them helps in aligning and matching current and new expectations Manage Time - The project has adequate fund to last throughout committed time to customer - Optimizing cost by understand the actual market price from competitor and multiple vendors during course of project - Plan for Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) of all products beforehand, a good rule of thumb is to have 10% spares for critical and frequently used items - If you can outsource the services to a supplier to expedite the process, you may do so Manage Finance - When requiring manpower, requests beforehand instead of “last minute” - Avoid having the mentality to delay the task before all other possible solutions are exhausted. If you are unable to deliver the full project on time, your company will be fined with Liquidated Damage (LD) charges. - Always include intentional spare time during planning to ensure project has proper time buffer to manage unforeseen circumstances - Have the mindset to motivate everyone to finish their tasks quickly and reliably , otherwise, team members may take time for granted - Know how to identify tasks or individuals who are stopping things from moving , then, resolve it quickly to ensure work schedules are properly met You may also like Working with Video Analytics (VA) software RMA and Maintenance Networking (Non-Sales) Disclaimer We did our best to provide you with thought-through content. Conduct classes (Tertiary Education) Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: WE Development Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:40:00 am Say Hello Article Job Process Say Hello Share with someone you care ! I want to ensure students can take away key learnings from every lesson. “I am in the classroom to serve my students, but they are not in the classroom to serve me…Some teachers have the idea they are the boss, and I find that these teachers can’t work well with students.” Here, good practices in conducting and serving our students are; 1) During the first two lessons of the semester, I start by stating the ground rules and requirements to ensure students know my expectation. This is done by; i) Explaining that we position them as best interest in our heart, but there must be hard rules that we all need to abide so we can learn and grow together effectively ii) State clearly what will cause them to fail the module and prevent themselves from doing so. To allow them to understand the seriousness, I will use past real events on students who have failed as an example. 2) During every other lesson, I will deliver the class as usual by going through each topic and encouraging students to approach me if they have issues with understanding. This is also a way for me to identify if I have done my job well. 3) For project-based lessons , I will ensure students can work cohesively, no peer bullying or being left out by identifying; i) If the class communicated and reacted positively and cohesively ii) Separated into groups with occasional conflicts iii) Work individually 4) It is our responsibility to identify if a class is victimising someone by observing the kinds of jokes and rumors they discuss openly or with me. If need be, we have to step in to protect the student. 5) For tutorial lessons, I will ask questions to identify the topic the class is struggling . I can then focus on their needs rather than based on my assumption to deliver the lesson. Also, I will coach and assist students in identifying solutions themselves rather than giving answers immediately. This enhances learning and their memory so they can better appreciate the topic. - Motivate students to have interest
Motivate students to have interest Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: WE Development Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:46:00 am Say Hello Article Job Process Say Hello Share with someone you care ! How can I motivate my students to study? What can I do!? Imagine you are now back in your student days; what will interest you to a topic that seemed uninteresting? Here are few ways we have identified, thought-through, and clarified; 1) Build a pleasant learning environment When the student feels comfortable in the class , they are more open and carefree. Their attention can go to two ways: the first is to be distracted by talking to peers, the second is to participate in the class, and we want the latter. This can be done by; i) set simple ground rules in the class and seek mutual agreement with them ii) allow students to voice their opinions related to the class activities iii) ensure there is at least once a two-way communication in each session 2) Hit the right common ground When you mention their favourite korean boy band or the characters in their game, do you observe their sudden shift in attention to you? Hitting the common ground helps in building your rapport with the students. This makes you approachable, and they are more open to sharing and voicing their opinions in class activities. Their participating rate will be higher as well! 3) Praise achievers Imagine you put in the effort to finish a task, and someone praise you, will you feel good? This is the exact feeling we want the students to have. We want them to think that their efforts are recognised. This helps them to be more confident and grow their interest in the class activities. It would help if you also showed concern for students who have improved in their results . 4) Observe first and feedback As we deliver the class, we should have gathered some information about the behaviour of the students . It is our responsibility to intervene if the student is not following the lesson. You may validate by directing questions to the student and see if they are paying attention. It is important to identify students who sit alone quietly and ignore the class. Then, find an opportunity to understand and see if the student needs help. When you succeed in resolving their issues, you are helping and motivating them to pay more attention in class. 5) Track and feedback When students feel noticed, they tend to do better because they want to meet the expectations of those who care for them. As a teacher, tracking student's progress is important as this shows you are noticing them. Providing healthy feedback shows that you are communicating your active observation on them and gives great affirmation to the student, and any advice is more susceptible to them hereon. A student will care about the class when they sense that their teacher cared for them. You may also like How to manage expectations as a teacher How to avoid the stumbling blocks of your career? Teaching English composition Brought to you by: WE Development Content written by: WE Development Last Updated: 9 June 2021 at 2:45:27 am Say Hello Article Job Process Say Hello Share with someone you care ! Ensure students can express their thoughts in words, write in proper English sentences, and has a flow to create clarity for the reader Here, we have identified a step by step process with key takeaways for narrative compositions; 1) I will start by explaining the importance of understanding the topic. This ensures the writing objective revolves around it for consistency . 2) I will encourage students to use; i) Story Arc which is by writing a change, usually from the past to the present, or present to the future. This allows the reader to experience the rise or fall of a situation to deliver the meaning behind the topic ii) Tension curve to excite the reader from small tension to a larger one or vice versa with the purpose to keep the reader interested in continuing with the reading 3) To enhance how students can apply the above methodologies, I will teach them; i) Create a setting by stating when, where, and how did it happen ii) Create a problem by describing the situation as an obstacle and how difficult it is to overcome iii) Set a climax by creating a limited time frame before something terrible happens or actions taken to fight the problem iv) Conclude by stating situations of moral dilemma or inner struggles that reflect the topic. An example can include; "if I do not cheat, my parent will scold me for my bad results". Students should mention the topic in this part to link back to the writing for proper closure 4) I will go through examples of each different writing type to allow students to have clarity on how to apply this writing method. Commissioning means to certify that the system is ready for actual implementation. Our job here is to check, ensure, and demonstrate to our customers and distributors that our system follows the set of agreed requirement. 1) We ensure all lighting systems in the building are in synergy with the remaining building management system (air conditioning and security systems) i) Using our software’s GUI to demonstrate the features of the lighting system based on client needs. For example; - the lighting of the buildings can be automatically dimmed down or shut down when we predict the place to be empty during a particular time slot - When the alarm or emergency system is triggered, our lighting system should correspond by turning certain areas of lights red or switching to flashing lights to indicate danger ii) With knowledge from previous training and working in past projects; we have a set of ways to test the system promptly 2) To mark the completion of testing and commissioning of lighting systems; some work include; i) Referring to a checklist and acceptance test requirement to carry out our commissioning procedures. This may sometimes be related to following industry standards and compliance to ISO/CIE ii) Referring to engineering drawings and system documentations to adjust relevant settings to meet commissioning requirement iii) After all commissioning work are completed , the customer will agree that the system is ready for implementation. This will be in the form of proper documentation with signature. 3) If your commissioning requires overseas traveling , here are some points to note: i) As we visit sites and work with overseas distributors, we may face communication issues because of the language barrier. With their minimal level of English, some useful techniques can be used; - Simple broken English - Sketching - Typing out English words - Non-verbal actions to illustrate a point - Pictures ii) Travel expenses (hotel, flight, meal, transport) are covered and should be claimable from the company ; you will need to know the budget allocated for this. iii) Overseas work trips may take place around once to four times per month and lasts at least three days per trip iv) Working hours abroad can be similar, shorter, or longer depending on your tasks. But do keep in mind traffic congestions in densely populated cities may delay your time to start and end work. Definition: Graphical User Interface (GUI) is an interface where you can easily click and make changes to the system without doing the actual coding yourself. For example, your handphone screen is a GUI where you can easily tap on an icon to start an application. As it’s not very user-friendly to open an application using programming codes.
